Sepia toned 1878 photograph, of the workers of Stobo's Laundry. Alexander Stobo (1807-1878) opened a steam laundry in Weehawken in 1844, located near the old Pennsylvania RR tunnel shaft. He was very successful, enlarged his business and became one of the richest men in New Jersey. However, he continued to live in a modest home very close to the laundry, until his death, the same year this photograph was taken.
This photograph is the oldest in the Weehawken Historical Commission's collection.
